Haiti

The news coming out of Haiti is monstrously bad.

Several of my Jesuit friends are there; two of them live and work in Port-au-Prince.

Please, if you can find it in you, at least pray or send good thoughts their way. If you're able to do more, please consider donating money to a reputable charitable organization. The Jesuit Refugee Service, Catholic Relief Services, and the Red Cross are three that come to mind immediately.

The mind boggles at the devastation in this island nation that has suffered so much for so long.

Blessings and peace to one and all,

Fr. Tim, SJ

And why have they suffered? No capitalism.

There's capitalism there in Haiti!

It's practiced by the 0.5% of the population whose corporations own 80% of everything of value and who have made it their goal to make sure no one else has access to adequate health care, jobs, education, and housing.

That's actually 'American' capitalism at it's finest, isn't it?

Not even close. Before you have capitalism, you need the law and respect for the law. After law, you need property rights for the individual-again not there. Lastly you need "all men created equal" etc. American capitalism has all these and provides the $100 million aid along with all the medical supplies etc provided. It provides the best med school in the world and evn provides the planes flying those supplies in. Please reconsider what you think of capitalism-what you are describing is Marxism. In fact there were 10,000 aid agencies on Haiti before the earthquake! 10,000! They were the enablers. Capitalism would have solved their problems not enabled them.
