One morning we were out flying and another aircraft participated in the same mission. Because there were going to be two aircraft flying to the same destination at the same time, one of the Crew Chiefs wanted to fly a US flag out his gunner’s hatch so the personnel in the other aircraft could photograph the event.
I’ve not yet seen whether the photos taken from the other helicopter turned out, but it was pretty exciting to watch the Crew Chief unfurling the flag out his hatch and struggling to hang onto it as we were moving along at a pretty good clip.
It would have been a bad thing, I suspect, to have had the flag take off on its own.
It’s a grand old flag.
Blessings and peace to one and all,
Fr. Tim, SJ
